Look under the hood of the 2017 Toyota Prius to see a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. Toyota's engineers mated the gas-fueled engine with electric motor and a battery pack. At its maximum output, this powertrain produces 121 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to its hybrid design, the Prius is a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). A continuously variable transmission (ECVT) powers the front-wheels.


Fuel economy is one of the most impressive factors for the Prius. According to EPA estimates, the regular Prius trims get 50 miles per gallon on the highway, 54 mpg in an urban setting, and a combined fuel efficiency of 52 mpg. The Two Eco trim estimates 53 mpg city and 58 mpg on the highway for a combined fuel efficiency of 56 mpg.

Safety Features

Standard safety equipment includes air bags, anti-lock disc brakes, a rearview camera, and stability and traction control. Every 2017 Prius also comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P package that includes lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and dynamic radar cruise control.
