Khalid alBalooshi defeated Al-Anabi Racing teammate Shawn Langdon in an all-Toyota Top Fuel final at today?s NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway. AlBalooshi?s win marked the sixth consecutive season that a Toyota-sponsored Top Fuel driver has won in Sonoma.
The win was the second of the season for AlBalooshi, who also was celebrating his 35th birthday today.
?It?s very special to win on my birthday,? said alBalooshi. ?This Wally was the best birthday gift I?ve ever received. I was feeling our car was running good in qualifying where we had three good runs. After we ran a 3.77 (low E.T. of the day in the opening round), I was confident we had a car that could win today.?
AlBalooshi defeated Billy Torrence, Clay Millican and fellow Toyota driver Richie Crampton on the way to the finals, while Langdon knocked off J.R. Todd, Doug Kalitta and Tony Schumacher to set up the final round match-up. Today?s final marked the second time the Al-Anabi teammates have faced off in a final ? having previously raced against each other for the win in Englishtown last season.
Rookie Crampton made it three Toyota Top Fuelers in today?s semi-finals as he advanced by beating Mike Salinas and Spencer Massey before losing to alBalooshi in a race decided by just eight one-thousandths of a second. With the strong showing, he moved up to ninth in points. Crampton is currently the leading contender for NHRA Rookie of the Year.
Ironically, the only Toyota Top Fuel driver who didn?t advance to the semi-finals was Antron Brown, who currently leads the series in wins with five and is second overall in points. The 2012 world champion smoked the tires in his first-round match-up and was upset by Spencer Massey.
In Funny Car, Alexis DeJoria was the fourth Toyota to reach the semi-finals today. She defeated Ron Capps in the first round and fellow Toyota driver Cruz Pedregon in her second run. Pedregon had earlier defeated Gary Densham in his opening round with his 4.076-second run being the quickest Funny Car pass of the day. Del Worsham and Tony Pedregon each lost in the opening round.
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series? three-race Western Swing comes to a close next weekend in Seattle with the O?Reilly Auto Parts Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways. Following Seattle, just two races ? Brainerd and Indianapolis ? remain in the NHRA regular season.

- Khalid alBalooshi?s victory today is his second of the season and the fourth of his Top Fuel career. He has now reached three finals this season ? previously winning at Pomona and finishing as the runner-up in Houston.
- By advancing to today?s finals, Shawn Langdon became the second Toyota driver to clinch his spot in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs this weekend. Langdon has now reached five final rounds this season ? four in the last eight races.
- Al-Anabi Racing has now won five consecutive races run in California. Shawn Langdon won all three races run in his home state in 2013 (Pomona Winternationals, Sonoma and Pomona Finals) and Khalid alBalooshi won earlier this season at Pomona in February.
- Alexis DeJoria advanced to for her fifth Funny Car semi-final of the season. She has two wins and one runner-up finish among the five.
- Rookie Richie Crampton reached his third Top Fuel semi-final of the season. All three of those showings have come in the last seven races.
- With three races remaining in the NHRA regular season, Antron Brown and Shawn Langdon have now clinched a berth in the Countdown to the Championship. Khalid alBalooshi moved up to eighth and Richie Crampton is now ninth in Top Fuel. Alexis DeJoria (sixth), Cruz Pedregon (eighth) and Del Worsham (ninth) are all on pace to qualify in Funny Car.
Shawn Langdon, Al-Anabi Racing Toyota Top Fuel dragster: ?Overall, it was a good day. Our car improved throughout the weekend and we made some big strides going to the finals. This was a brand new car that we were planning to bring out at Indianapolis, but brought it out a little early. It was responding really well. We might have been a little aggressive in the final. We just hazed the tires at about 500 feet. That left lane was a little tricky, but we were confident going in that we could run well in that lane. It was a great weekend for the Al-Anabi team, though, both cars made the finals, so it was a win-win regardless of who won, but I just wish it would have come in the other lane. It was nice to clinch our berth in the Countdown. We would have liked to have the extra points, but we gained on first and second-place and even if we finish third, we can close on that lead pretty quickly.?
Antron Brown, Matco Tools Toyota Top Fuel Dragster: "We got a little greedy out there and sometimes when you get greedy, that's what happens to you (after smoking his tired in round one). With that being said, we saw that 3.77 that Khalid (al Balooshi) ran in the first pair, so we thought the track was better than Friday night and we didn't want to get caught with our pants down. We couldn't take a chance. We had to go for it. Spencer and his team were definitely ready so we went out there and just pressed. It didn't go our way. We didn't have suffer too much damage this weekend with Doug (Kalitta) going out in the second round. Our main mission is still to go after that number one spot for the Countdown, that's what we are pressing hard for."
Cruz Pedregon, Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry Funny Car: ?The Snap-on Tools Toyota was fast today with the low ET of the day (4.076) and we even backed it out a little on that run. In the second round, we had the lead at 300, but just didn?t get down the track. All we can do now is move on and get ready for Seattle.?
Alexis DeJoria, Patron XO Café Toyota Camry Funny Car: ?You can never bet on qualifying because my guys turn it around on race day. We went rounds today, which we really needed to do after going out in the first round at the last couple of races. Now it?s on to Seattle and we are in the Countdown.?
Richie Crampton, GEICO/Lucas Oil Toyota Top Fuel Dragster: ?The GEICO team did a fantastic job again today. We're still not having the very best race day luck that I know we would like to have, but nonetheless it was a good outing for us again. I really feel like we've turned a corner here. It's getting-down-to-business time in the season, so it's a good time to start making some strong Sunday runs and winning as many rounds as we can."
Wallace Masters the Mud with his Tundra at Eldora Speedway
For the second consecutive NASCAR race weekend, Kyle Busch had a role with all the top-finishing Toyotas in the three races that took place over the weekend. Busch finished second in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race and the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Darrell Wallace Jr. drove a Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) Tundra to victory lane in the NASCAR Camping World Truck (NCWTS) race at Ohio?s Eldora Speedway.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) In Sunday afternoon?s NSCS race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, all three Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) drivers registered top-five finishes in the 160 lap race that was won by Jeff Gordon. Along with Busch?s runner-up result, his JGR teammates Denny Hamlin (third) and Matt Kenseth (fourth) also recorded top-five results at the 2.5-mile speedway.
It marks the third time in the past four Sprint Cup Series races that Busch has finished as the race runner-up. In addition to his second-place finish at Indianapolis, Busch also crossed the finish line second at Kentucky (June 28) and New Hampshire (July 13).
?I don?t think anybody had anything for the 24 (Jeff Gordon),? said Busch, after the race. ?It seemed like anybody that he got behind, he was able to pass. At this place, aero situations are so difficult that he could handle it and pass guys in the long run. His car was really good today and he proved that by being able to get out there so far and then he was just riding. I was trying to save my stuff so the guys behind me didn?t catch me. It was a great day for Joe Gibbs Racing here finishing two, three and four. I?m real proud of that and having the Snickers Camry come home second means a lot to our guys.
?Today?s performance was good,? added Busch. ?We want to win and I think this is my second second-place finish here. It?s frustrating in that respect, but it?s rewarding because we?ve been a little behind this year and it seemed like we had some good speed this weekend.?
Following Busch to the checkered flag was Hamlin, who tried to use strategy to gain an advantage during the race.
?I knew early in the race we had a car that was really fast,? said Busch. ?Then Darian (Grubb, crew chief) pulled that strategy and then we were going to have a 15 second lead with enough fuel to make it. We just didn?t get it full (of fuel) that one stop. We had to get it full and we just didn?t get it full -- so we had to make that extra pit stop. That just shows how fast our car was that we were able to battle back with our FedEx team. So, proud of the run we had. Obviously, the passing is extremely difficult here. Whoever gets out front can really, really go. We passed all the cars that we needed to pass today. We had a fast car. All you can say is that we had a car that was capable of winning.?
Michael Waltrip Racing Camry drivers Clint Bowyer (16th) and Brian Vickers (18th) also registered top-20 finishes at Indianapolis.
It marks the second consecutive race where all three JGR drivers registered top-10 finishes. Earlier this month in New Hampshire (July 20), the three JGR drivers -- Busch (second), Kenseth (fourth) and Hamlin (eighth) -- also all recorded top-10 finishes. The last time three JGR Camrys all had top-five finishes was in 2010 (September) at Richmond International Raceway, when Hamlin picked up the victory, Busch was runner-up and former JGR driver Joey Logano finished fourth.
In the NSCS championship point standings, Kenseth is in fourth-place in the standings with 661 points -- 56 points behind first-place Gordon. Four other Camry drivers -- Busch (sixth), Bowyer (10th), Hamlin (11th) and Vickers (18th) -- are all among the top-20 in the point standings.
The next race on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule is at Pennsylvania?s Pocono Raceway, Aug.3.
NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) In Saturday afternoon?s NNS race in Indianapolis, Busch was the first Camry driver to the finish line with a runner-up result to race-winner Ty Dillon.
Busch started the race on the pole in the JGR No. 54 Monster Energy Camry and led the field once for 10 laps at the superspeedway. He ran among the race leaders throughout the 100 lap event, but was never able to catch Dillon.
?We just didn?t have enough,? said Busch, following the race. ?It?s unfortunate that we weren?t as good as we were last year. I thought we were -- but we weren?t. Maybe it was the cloud cover -- or whatever -- I don?t know. I felt that we?d be better than that and we just weren?t. There at the end (of the race) I had a restart and couldn?t get through turn one. I just slipped -- don?t know what happened. He (Ty Dillon) just drove right by me and that was the race.?
Kenseth finished in third-place right behind his JGR teammate Busch.
?Our strategy was good,? said Kenseth, after the race. ?The caution fell at the right time and we could make it on fuel. We were a little off from the best couple cars -- but we got our track position there and got a decent finish. We just couldn?t keep the front tires turning the entire fuel run and that was end of the run. We had a decent car, our Resers Camry was okay, but it wasn?t as good as the top cars. Kevin (Kidd, No. 20 crew chief) and Adam (Stevens, No. 54 crew chief) had a plan today and then we got the caution at the right time on top of that, and we were able to get all our track position back there and hold on to a decent finish.?
Camry driver Elliott Sadler (15th) also registered a top-15 result.
After the Indianapolis race, Sadler now sits third in the unofficial NNS point standings, trailing leader Chase Elliott by 11 points.
The NASCAR Nationwide Series returns to action next weekend at Iowa Speedway, August 2.
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) Tundra driver Darrell Wallace Jr. captured the checkered flag in Wednesday evening?s NCWTS race at the half-mile Eldora Speedway dirt track -- the second time the series raced at the Rossburg, Ohio circuit.
Wallace started sixth in the Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) No. 54 Toyota Care Tundra and the led the field twice for a race-high 97 laps (of 150). It was his second victory this season and his third career win driving a Tundra.
?This is awesome,? said Wallace in victory lane after the race. ?I?m still trying to figure out how this happened. We went and tested a few weeks ago. We weren?t that sideways when we raced here last year, so I was able to practice that during the test. We just got better throughout the day. I said from the start of the race our Toyota Tundra was really good and it showed. We were able to start sixth, get out to the lead fairly quick and control our own destiny.
?I?m so proud to work with my guys,? added Wallace. ?These guys never give up no matter what race we go to -- a road course, dirt, Martinsville -- one of our best tracks -- or Gateway, a track we?d never been to. And they always want to win.?
With Wallace?s win, Toyota extended its record-setting winning streak in the NCWTS. Dating back to last year when Erik Jones won at Phoenix (Nov. 2013), a Tundra driver has visited victory lane 12 consecutive times. The previous record for consecutive wins by one manufacturer was eight -- set in 1995 (Chevrolet) and 2001 (Dodge).
Tundra drivers to register wins during the streak include Busch (Daytona, Kansas, Charlotte, Dover and Kentucky), Matt Crafton (Martinsville and Texas), Wallace (St. Louis and Eldora) and Jones (Iowa) this year, and Jones (Phoenix) and Busch (Miami) at the end of the 2013 season.
Tundra drivers have now recorded 122 NCWTS wins since the start of the 2004 season
Other Tundra drivers among the top-10 in Eldora were Ken Schrader (fourth), John Hunter Nemechek (sixth), Jeb Burton (seventh), Johnny Sauter (eighth) and Crafton (ninth).
The NCWTS will return to action at Pennsylvania?s Pocono Raceway on Sat., Aug. 2.
