SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. (August 19, 2014) – Last spring, Dr. Jo Harris had a hunch.
As president of the newly formed BridgeValley Community and Technical College, she oversaw the merger of Bridgemont and Kanawha Valley Colleges, building on the strengths of both institutions. Dr. Harris’ hunch: that when good ideas are shared among the two colleges, that great things can happen.
When Tierra Kavanaugh Turner first came to the Opportunity Exchange (OE) more than a decade ago, she didn’t have the capacity or resources to be a supplier to Toyota. But that wasn’t about to stop her. So she continued to come, year after year.
“They identified areas I needed to strengthen and improve – increasing staff, documenting processes, and exploring potential strategic alliances,” says Turner, owner of TKT & Associates, Inc. and TKT-nectir Global Staffing, LLC. “In the interim I worked with their suppliers to gain specific industry experience and scale.”
Christopher Bell registered a dominating performance in leading all 30 laps to win Sunday?s Miller Lite Cornfest at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, in an event co-sanctioned by USAC and POWRi. The win is the 19th for a Toyota-powered car in national Midget Car Series competition this year.
Bell jumped to the lead from the pole and continuously separated himself from the field, despite seven cautions. He eventually would win by 1.185-seconds on the way to his 11th victory of the season in his Keith Kunz Motorsports Toyota.
?It seems like 30 laps takes forever at this place,? said Bell, who has won at Angell Park four times this year. ?Running by yourself and seeing those laps on the board, it seems like they click off so slowly. All those yellows and being out front is just agonizing. It?s special to be so good here, especially after having so much trouble here last year. We?ve had a great stretch this season up here at the Prairie.?
Tracy Hines, who was the fastest qualifier earlier in his Parker Machinery Turbines Toyota, finished fourth and current POWRi leader Zach Daum placed sixth to give Toyota three of the top-six finishers.
The night didn?t go nearly as well for USAC point leader Rico Abreu, who placed 13th after getting collected in a crash after two competitors made contact shortly before the mid-point of the race. He had been running in the top-five. Tanner Thorson finished 14th, Austin Brown was 15th and Parker Price-Miller placed 22nd to round out the Toyota-powered entries.
Despite the rough going, Abreu still holds an 82-point advantage in the USAC national standings ahead of Hines. Bell is third and has climbed to within 103 points of his teammate Abreu. Daum is fifth, while Thorson remains in seventh place.
The USAC National Midget Championship is now off until the 33rd annual 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway on September 20, while the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Car Championship returns to the track August 26 at the Wayne County Speedway in Wayne, Ill.
Morgan Lucas defeated Doug Kalitta in today?s Top Fuel final in just his third race of the season, while Alexis DeJoria made her second career 3.9-second Funny Car pass to lead Toyota in today?s NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn.
Lucas, who stepped away from his full-time seat after last season to focus on the family business, won for the third time at Brainerd. He defeated Bob Vandergriff, Steve Torrence and Antron Brown with three passes in the 3.7?s, including a blistering 3.729 in the semi-finals. The final wasn?t nearly as fast, but it got the job done as he crossed the finish line in a ball of fire in a 4.88 to 4.98 victory over Doug Kalitta.
"I knew it was hurt, but it?s the final,? Lucas relayed. ?You don?t leave anything on the table. You just go for it. It lit up. That was actually cool. My second thought after ?we just won? was ?this is going to make some great TV!?
DeJoria made history in Sunday?s second round with her 3.998-second pass at 315.93-mph in her Patron XO Café Toyota Camry, becoming the first Funny Car driver ever to run a sub-four second pass at Brainerd. It was her second career 3.9-second run and she remains the only woman to accomplish the feat in Funny Car racing. She also ran the quickest pass in the opening round (4.010). She would eventually fall in the semi-finals after losing traction in her match with Ron Capps.
DeJoria?s Kalitta Motorsports teammate Del Worsham was the only other Camry driver to advance past the first round after a win over fellow Toyota driver Tony Pedregon. Cruz Pedregon lost to Jack Beckman, while Chad Head fell to Matt Hagan to round out the Toyota contingent.
Brown made it two Toyota drivers into the Top Fuel semi-finals by beating J.R. Todd and Larry Dixon after earning number one qualifier honors on Saturday. Shawn Langdon also won a round on Sunday with a victory over Terry McMillen. Khalid alBalooshi and Richie Crampton lost in their opening round match-ups. Crampton?s loss was particularly heartbreaking as he established new track records for low E.T. and miles per hour (328.54), only to lose on a hole-shot. His E.T. mark would later be eclipsed.
Due to inclement weather, the Funny Car final and the NHRA Pro Stock semi-finals and final had to be postponed until Indianapolis.
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series? is off next weekend, before concluding its regular season at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis on Labor Day weekend. Indianapolis also will play host to the $100,000 Traxxas Shootout. The Championship to the Countdown playoffs will begin in Charlotte, Sept. 12-14.

-Today?s victory is the first of the season for Morgan Lucas and the 10th of his Top Fuel career. It comes in just his third race of the season, having advanced to the semi-finals or beyond in all three races after semi-final showings at the Gatornationals and the Toyota Summernationals in Englishtown.
-Alexis DeJoria ran a 3.998-second pass to win her second round match-up with Matt Hagan. She is the only woman in Funny Car history to run under four seconds after previously doing it at the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona.
-Alexis DeJoria reached her third consecutive semi-final and her seventh of the season. She has two wins and one runner-up finish among the seven. With the strong showing today, she?s climbed back up to fifth in points and has clinched her berth in the Countdown.
-Antron Brown has now advanced to the semi-finals or beyond 11 times in 17 races this season.
-With just the U.S. Nationals remaining in the NHRA regular season, five Toyota drivers have clinched their berths for the Countdown to the Championship. Antron Brown, Shawn Langdon, Khalid alBalooshi and Richie Crampton have all qualified in Top Fuel. Alexis DeJoria is safely into the playoffs as well, while Cruz Pedregon and Del Worsham will clinch berths simply by winning a round at the U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend.
Alexis DeJoria, Patron XO Café Toyota Camry Funny Car: ?Brainerd turned out to be a really good race for us. We qualified well, had lane choice all day long and into the night, and broke the track record twice. And our record is a pretty strong one at that - another three-second run for our Patrón XO Cafe team. I?m so proud of my guys. We had quick turn-arounds because of the rain delays and trying to get it all in before the sun went down, and they did a hell of a job of getting our car around quickly. This is our third semi-final in a row, and we clinched our spot in The Countdown, which feels excellent - it?s the very first time for our team, and we?re all excited for Indy!? Shawn Langdon, Al-Anabi Racing Toyota Top Fuel dragster: ?The Al-Anabi team made some really good runs this weekend; we qualified third and felt good about race day. The 3.77 we ran in the first round of eliminations was our best run of the weekend. In the second round, we made another good run, but we had a fuel pump problem, and Tony got the win. It?s not the way we wanted to end the weekend, but the Al-Anabi car is good. We have some things to work on in the Indy test this week, and we?ll be ready to defend our U.S. Nationals title on Labor Day weekend.?
Khalid alBalooshi, Al-Anabi Racing Toyota Top Fuel dragster: ?Our Al-Anabi car was pretty good in qualifying, but we had some problems. We broke a blower belt on one run and dropped a cylinder on some others. On Sunday, we ran a 79 (3.798-second run), but Spencer made a good pass and ran a 78 (3.781-second pass). It was not a great weekend for our team, but at least we have a car now. We are testing in Indianapolis this week, and we will work on getting our car to be more consistent. We need to work on some things to be sure we are ready for Indy and the Countdown.? Richie Crampton, GEICO/Lucas Oil Toyota Top Fuel Dragster: ""At the start of the season we sat down and talked about things we wanted to accomplish in the regular season, and the top thing was to qualify for the Countdown. It's huge for GEICO, Lucas Oil, and Toyota, and it's especially big for the guys on this team that work so hard for us. It's nice to clinch a spot with another regular-season race left to run because we have a chance to really reset and prepare for the Countdown. Once it starts, we have four races in four consecutive weekends, and we want to be in top form for that run."
